About us: the experts behind PrintCSS.dev

We are Bit&Black, software developers and a business unit of WirbelWild, a Stuttgart-based company specialising in authentic, respectful and personalised communication. Since 2016, we have been developing software to realise our own vision of the most beautiful and relevant printed materials ever created.

PrintCSS is a key technology for us, as it allows us to automate 100% uncompromisingly good graphic design. Our hyper-personalised layouts are unique, yet look as good as if they were handmade. Over the years, we have created countless applications for ourselves and our clients to produce business cards, postcards, calendars, posters, brochures and books using PrintCSS. We are proud that our software has already won several awards.

Frequently asked questions.

What is PrintCSS?

PrintCSS is the name given to an extension of the CSS standard that enables the creation of fully functional print-ready PDFs using HTML or XML. It is therefore an alternative to traditional DTP programmes and is ideally suited to automated typesetting. As PrintCSS is based on freely available languages, there is no monopoly on it. It can therefore be described as a disruptive technology.

vWhat is PrintCSS suitable for?

PrintCSS is ideal for any layouts or PDFs that need to be generated as automatically as possible. This could include invoices in e-commerce systems, or even entire books generated at the touch of a button. As PrintCSS is based on CSS and HTML, it is easy to get started.

Does it cost anything to use PrintCSS?

No, because PrintCSS is based on HTML and CSS, which are free and can be used by anyone. To render it as a PDF, you need software, which may incur a charge. However, there are also free renderers available.

We at Bit&Black can help you. We have been working with PrintCSS technology for many years and know it inside out. Our services are used worldwide; through consultancy and software development, we support businesses of all sizes with their applications.

I’ve heard that, as well as PrintCSS, you also use IDML. Why?

That’s true. Depending on the requirements, one or the other may be more appropriate. For layouts with extremely demanding requirements, particularly in the area of typography, IDML may be more suitable. However, generating PDFs automatically from IDMLs is significantly slower and more expensive than doing so using PrintCSS. You can find out more about IDML at idml.dev.
